Designed with
data protection in mind

Schools ask hard questions before buying software. Here are the honest answers.

🏠
Local-first — you choose when data is sent
Day-to-day pupil names, observations, scores and photos live in your browser's IndexedDB on the device. A Cloudflare Worker and encrypted KV storage support optional backup, parent portal, school access codes, and AI report proxying. Nothing goes to AI, backup, or the parent portal unless you (or an optional auto-backup you enable) trigger it.
🤖
AI reports use name-tokenised data
When generating a report, observation notes and scores are sent via our Cloudflare Worker to Anthropic's API. Known pupil names from your class list are replaced with placeholder tokens on your device first and restored locally after the AI responds. This is pseudonymisation, not full anonymisation — residual risk remains (for example names not in your class list).
🔐
PIN-protected access
PupilPulse supports a 4-digit PIN lock that activates automatically when the app is minimised or the device sleeps. Only the designated PIN holder can access the data, protecting it if a device is left unattended or lost.
📋
Designed for UK GDPR
Purple Computing can provide a Data Processing Agreement (DPA), a DPIA template, and a school-ready Privacy Notice on request. Known pupil names are tokenised before any AI call. How Anthropic handles API data (including training and retention) is governed by their current commercial API terms — we point schools there rather than restating those as our own guarantee. Formal Privacy clear / OO-06 for live pupil AI is still Owner-gated.
💾
Backup and export
Teachers can export all data as a CSV backup at any time, and generate a readable HTML export of the full class record. Your data is always yours — no vendor lock-in, no subscription cliff where you lose access.
🎙️
Microphone — you're in control
The microphone is only accessed when you explicitly tap the voice note button. Audio is processed locally in the browser using the Web Speech API — it does not pass through PupilPulse's servers. You can use the app entirely by typing if preferred.

Everything you
need to know

From teachers, IT leads and school business managers — answered honestly.

Day-to-day pupil records (names, class lists, observations, scores, photos) are stored in your browser's IndexedDB on the device. PupilPulse is local-first: teachers do not create personal cloud accounts. Optional features use a Cloudflare Worker and encrypted Cloudflare KV storage for school access-code checks, encrypted backups, parent-portal ciphertext, and related school services. AI reports are proxied through that Worker to Anthropic. So: local store for daily use, plus named Cloudflare services when you use backup, portal, access codes, or AI — not “no server / no cloud database”.
When generating a report, PupilPulse sends observation notes and assessment scores via our Cloudflare Worker to Anthropic's API (the company behind Claude AI). Known pupil names from your class list are replaced with placeholder tokens (for example [PUPIL]) on your device first — the real name is substituted back locally after the AI responds. School or teacher context may still be included in the prompt. Anthropic returns the report text under their commercial API terms. For training and retention, review Anthropic's current terms and privacy policy at anthropic.com/privacy — we do not restate those as a PupilPulse guarantee.
PupilPulse is designed for UK GDPR with a local-first architecture and optional encrypted Cloudflare services. We do not claim a finished, signed Privacy clear for every school scenario until that pack is Owner-confirmed for your deployment. For schools that require paperwork, Purple Computing can provide a DPA, a DPIA template, and a school-facing Privacy Notice template. Contact [email protected] to request these documents.
No. The microphone is only activated when you explicitly tap the voice note button — your browser will request permission the first time and you can revoke it at any point. Audio is processed using the browser's built-in Web Speech API, which runs natively on your device. PupilPulse does not record, store or transmit audio files. If you prefer not to use voice input, PupilPulse works entirely by text.
PupilPulse supports a 4-digit PIN lock — the app auto-locks when minimised, so an unattended device is protected. Clear local browser storage removes the on-device copy. If encrypted cloud backup or parent-portal links were used, ciphertext can remain in Cloudflare KV until those backups/portals are revoked or purged and school access codes are rotated. Treat teacher leavers as: clear device storage, revoke portals, purge backups, rotate the school code — do not assume “no central copy” alone is enough.
Anthropic's commercial API terms are the source of truth for training and retention — they are separate from free consumer products. PupilPulse strips pupil names before the call. Schools that need written confirmation should review Anthropic's current API terms and can request Anthropic's Data Processing Addendum; Purple Computing can assist. We do not claim zero retention beyond what those documents say.
PupilPulse uses peer-to-peer sync aimed at the same local network. A teacher generates a class PIN and a TA can join using that PIN. Class data is shared between devices for the session. The app may load a peer-networking library from a CDN; depending on network setup, signalling/STUN helpers can involve third-party infrastructure. Sync is not meant to run automatically in the background after you close the session.
The PIN is an optional 4-digit access code set by the teacher in Settings → Security. When enabled, the app locks automatically when it loses focus (e.g. phone is put down or browser tab switched). Only the teacher who set the PIN can unlock it. The PIN is stored locally and cannot be recovered by Purple Computing — if lost, it can be reset by clearing PupilPulse's browser storage (which also clears all local data, so regular CSV backups are recommended). A separate class-sharing PIN is used solely to authorise TA sync and has no relationship to the access PIN.
Yes for the on-device copy. Teachers can export all data (pupils, classes, notes, scores, reports) to CSV or a readable HTML export. To delete local data, use Settings → Data & Backup → Clear All Data, or clear browser storage for the PupilPulse site. Individual pupils and notes can be deleted in-app (PIN-protected). If you used encrypted cloud backup or the parent portal, those Cloudflare KV copies are separate: revoke/purge them as well so erasure is complete end-to-end.
PupilPulse is a browser-based PWA with no software installation required. External calls use HTTPS (TLS 1.2+). There is no traditional remote desktop into teacher devices and no open inbound ports on a school server we operate. Optional Cloudflare Worker/KV services hold encrypted backups, parent-portal ciphertext, and school-code metadata, and proxy AI traffic — so we do not claim “no persistent server-side processing of pupil data.” For Cyber Essentials Plus or ISO 27001 assessments, Purple Computing can provide a data-flow diagram and DPA on request.
